What is the difference between sadness and depression?
Sadness is a perfectly normal human emotion that everyone experiences. It is usually a product of a particularly challenging, disappointing, or hurtful event. This means that sadness is about something in particular. However, depression is a much more serious and seemingly permanent experience. Depression does not require something disappointing to happen; in fact, it usually is a challenge people face when there are no triggers.
What are the signs of depression?
Many people overlook their depression because they don’t recognize the severity of their condition. To be diagnosed with depression, people need to exhibit at least five of the following symptoms for at least two weeks:
- Irritable or moody
- Loss of interest in activities
- Change in appetite or weight
- Difficulty concentrating and making decisions
- Low energy levels
- Feelings of restlessness
- Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
- Thoughts about suicide or dying
Even if you only feel two or three of these symptoms, you should still seek help. Depression is a very common illness that can be treated.
How can a therapist help?
A therapist is not able to necessarily cure your depression; however, they can help you navigate through your feelings and develop healthy habits. They can also guide you as you separate your true personality from your mood swings caused by this illness.
